It took a good bit of research ('cause I'm no electrician) and a few experiments and adjustments, and I finally created a working battery powered lamp that emits enough light for reading! here's the how-to, in case you find yourself inspired to light up a spot that has no available electrical outlet.
1. LED bulbs take relatively little power. 12 volts is adequate, and it is available by battery. A single AA battery provides 1.5 volts. So, 8 AA batteries in a bank provides 12V. First I tried using a light strip (the adhesive kind that can go under cabinets for task lighting) plugged into an 8 battery bank. However, these light strips are generally only about as bright as a 40 watt incandescent bulb (about 450 lumens), which is not bright enough for reading (need about 800-1000 lumens). I found a 12V, 1000 lumen bulb shaped just like a classic light bulb (called E26) from Norman Lamps.
2. Lamp sockets are generally wired for plugging into 120 volt electrical outlets. Solution here - a 12V light switch with E26 socket that plugs into a battery pack. This came from 12v Monster.
3. A rechargeable battery pack. First I tried a trickle charger (like used for a small engine). However, the cooling fan that was part of the unit was quiet but not silent. I landed on this battery pack at Amazon - TalentCell rechargeable 12V battery w/ AC/DC output
4. Lamp. You can make a lamp out of nearly anything. I used mirror spray paint and a vinegar wash technique on this thrift store vase for an antiqued silver/glass look. A masonry bit to drill a hole for the cord and an old CD to fill the top of the vase and serve as a landing spot for the lamp shade and harp finished it off.

Portable lamp holder for anywhere
This wire and lampholder, mini DC 12 volt battery bank and a 12V filament bulb are all I needed for my 1 month camping trip in the desert. I had a Goal Zero solar panel and was able to enjoy renewable energy sourced lighting in the middle of no where.
